The 2010 Northwestern Wildcats emerged from the Big Ten on a three game winning streak and beat both #24 Wisconsin and perennial powerhouse Iowa this season. "We've been a little banged up throughout the entire course of the year," Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald said. "As we got healthy, we also improved fundamentally and technically as a football team. That led to success on the field."
The Auburn Tigers come into the Outback Bowl averaging 213.8 yards rushing and 218.5 yards passing per game averaging 32.9 points a game while holding their opponents to 26.9 points per game. "Our fan base right now and our coaches and our players … we are so jacked up about this and it's going to be a great following," said head coach Gene Chizik, a Clearwater native who began his coaching career at Seminole High. "I know it's a great bowl because I'm from down there and I get all that. We can't stand it, we're so excited.”
Does New Year’s in Florida bring visions of orange groves, white beaches, and blue skies? Yeah, yeah. But besides beaches and oranges, there is one thing that marks New Year’s in Florida - and that’s the Outback Bowl!
What a way to kick off the year! The 2009 Outback Bowl featured and televised by ESPN featured the 9-4 Iowa Hawkeyes against the 7-6 South Carolina Gamecocks. While Iowa was favored to win by four, the Hawkeyes pounded the Gamecocks with 31 points by the third quarter while the South Carolina failed to move the ball effectively leaving them in a 31 point deficit by the beginning of the 4th. USC began a comeback in the 4th and managed to score 10 points, but the damage had been done. The Hawkeyes take the game 31-10.
Formerly known as the Hall of Fame Bowl, the Outback Bowl celebrates 21 years in the Tampa Bay area, with Outback Steakhouse becoming the title sponsor in 1995. This college football game matches up teams from the South Eastern Conference and Big Ten Conference (the third pick from each!). The Bowl finishes a week-long event session throughout Tampa, and has become a New Year’s Day tradition. Parts of these events include a Beach Day in Clearwater, FL. And the New Year’s Eve Parade in Ybor City.
Before calling Florida home, the Hall of Fame Bowl was held in Birmingham, Alabama’s Legion Field. In 1986, the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame decided to relocate the game to Tampa, First to Tampa Stadium, then into Raymond James Stadium in 1999 – Becoming the first bowl in Tampa since the 1954 Cigar Bowl.
